At the UN Millennium Summit in 2000,189 world leaders pledged to work together to make a better world for all by 2015. They signed the Millennium Declaration, which had the following 8 goals:
Goal 1:
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2:
Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3:
Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4:
Reduce child mortality
Goal 5:
Improve maternal health

Water is one of the essentials of life, and a key aspect for human development. But, it will interest you to know that, for large sections of humanity, this basic need is not in place. In our world today, over 1 million children are dying for a glass of water and a toilet. 1.1 billion People have no clean water. Meanwhile the MDG 7- talks about ensuring environmental sustainability and halving the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993, in conformity with the recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).
On 22nd March 2010, the world will commemorate World Water Day with series of activities and actions to the theme of water quality while reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management. World Water Day 2010 activities will aim to communicate messages on water quality and human well-being.
